Router settings - DNS

 dns

DNS adjustments for privacy or protection.
(for every device on your network or individually)

Smart users, can adjust their DNS-Server in their Router. One place, all covered. But it requires some technical knowledge which is different for different vendors. The basics are the same.

Basically: you login into your router, go to settings / dhcp / dns and adjust the valures of the IP Address, which contains of 4 octets: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (this can be 3, 2 of 1 digits per octet).

What do you seek really? Want to be protected against attacks? Or is it privacy you seek?

or

Do you just want to set it to something else because you're on the road or somewhere public?

Curios?

Private Network Address Ranges

Addresses not to be adjusted unless you know what you're doing:

Class A: 10.XXX.XXX.XXX - 10.XXX.XXX.XXX

Class B: 172.16.XXX.XXX - 172.32.XXX.XXX

Class C: 192.168.XXX.XXX - 192.168.255.255

To me, there are two types of humans:

Either your want protection, or you want privacy.

I'll provide you two choices of recommendation.

Curious what my preference is? I protect myself against virusses, because else my privacy is gone either way.

Read on, to setup DNS to protect yourself and/or your family.

  • Anti malware DNS from IBM (against the most common attacks of Virusses/Malware/Ransomware).
    • Primair: 9.9.9.9
    • Secundair: 149.112.112.112
      • https://www.quad9.net/faq

  • Privacy browsing DNS from Cloudfare
(max. logs of 24 hour, then deleted)
    • Primair: 1.1.1.1
    • Secundair: 1.0.0.1
      • https://blog.cloudflare.com/dns-resolver-1-1-1-1

When you are mixing those two together, you are not protected against on or the other. Use one, and from that one set the secondary also, but don't mix.

Does this suffice and is an Endpoint Protection not needed in this case? No, you need several layers of security to protect against the various attacks. Not all can be detected and prevented.

Steps per device (if not on Router level, such as at work)

example for being on the road or not at home (3g/4g/Public Wifi).
